It may not be as valuable as the engine, but the first thing people see will be your car or trucks’s paintjob. Whether you drive a sports car, utility vehicle, van, luxury car, or sport utility vehicle people will see, and judge, based on the paintjob and appearance of your vehicle.
We probably don’t realize just how much time we spend in our car. Think about the hours in traffic. And then it is the first things people see when they come to your home, gleaming in the driveway. Your car, and its appearance say a lot about you. So it is more than vanity that you want to take care of that paint. Naturally anything wears down over time. Nevertheless there are still things you can do to extend the life of the paint on your vehicle and minimize damage to the exterior.
I Read a few articles on caring for your cars paint job and you will probably see this theme going through them. The theme I speak of is that you have to be committed to caring for your car’s paint exterior. This means a regular schedule of washing and waxing your car. Like any other part of the vehicle you have to make concerted scheduled effort to maintain it, and the rewards are obvious.
You wouldn’t think neglect would be one of the big reasons people do not properly maintain their car’s paint job but it really is. And the remedy for this is not that complicated. Here are a few basic things to incorporate into your car maintenance routine to protect that paint.
Regular Car Washing
This one is pretty much car maintenance 101. Regular car washings are a big part of a paint maintenance program. A few caveats here. Make sure to actually have a reminder to do it as it easy to put something like this off. Second use a detergent or shampoo that is designed for cars. Do not use something designed for dishes or anything except an automobile. It will make a big difference.
Protecting Automotive Paint
But there is more to washing the car to protect the paint
Washing is not enough. You want to make sure it is dry without damaging the paint. For this use a microfiber cloth to gently mop up existing water. Avoid jerky or expansive movements that can spread dirt around or potentially ad spots or blemishes to the paint. Think steady, slow , controlled movements and do not rush.
Car Paint Maintenance: Detailing
If you are still reading at this point it is time to detail. This is the stage of going back to the car and gently working out any additional dirt, spot, or blemishes. There are a number of compounds you can use to do this. Just make sure it is a reputable brand designed for car detailing. Also read the directions thoroughly and follow them.
Waxing The Vehicle Paint
Waxing is the final step in this simple maintenance program. Make sure to wax your car or truck after detailing. Use a microfiber cloth and smooth circular strokes to apply it.
Word To The Wise
Make sure to read the directions and understand them before you apply any product to your vehicle. Better yet, hire a professional to do this for you. Your time is valuable and using a car paint product incorrectly could have disastrous consequences.
